Asset Class

Asset Classes define primary functional group of an Asset. They are the second level in the Asset hierarchy in Samurai CMMS and are used to group similar Assets under a Manufacturer.

Asset Hierarchy

The Asset hierarchy is: Manufacturer → Class → Model or Group → Asset

For example: Caterpillar → Haul Truck → 793F → DT001

Relationship to Models and Assets

Asset Classes sit between Manufacturers and Models in the Asset hierarchy.

This structure means:

  • Each Model belongs to a single Asset Class
  • Assets inherit Class information through their assigned Model
  • Changing a Class updates how related Models and Assets are grouped in reporting

How Asset Classes work

An Asset Class represents a functional grouping of assets, such as Haul Truck, Excavator, Forklift, or Conveyor. Each Class can belong to multiple Manufacturers and contain multiple Models.

Asset Classes are commonly used for:

  • Filtering Assets and Work Orders by asset Class
  • Analysing costs and performance across similar equipment
  • Tracking KPIs against defined Class targets
  • Supporting dashboards and operational reporting

Add a Class

  1. From the side menu select Reference Tables → Models & Groups → Class
  2. Select + Add Class
  3. Enter the Class name.

Many classes of construction and mining equipment have been loaded into Samurai and are available in this list. Try to find the asset class before adding a new one.

KPI targets at the Class level

KPI targets can be defined at the Asset Class level to support performance monitoring.

This allows:

  • Consistent KPI benchmarks across similar Assets
  • Comparison of Asset performance against Class targets
  • Reporting at the Class level without Asset-specific configuration

To assign targets to a Class:

  1. From the side menu select Reference Tables → Models & Groups → Targets
  2. Search for the Class
  3. Press the Edit icon for the Class
  4. Amend to Targets to the desired level
  5. Toggle Include in KPIs? to Yes

Targets are included in KPIs by default. Toggle this to No if you do not wish for these Classes to show in KPI reports.

Important considerations

  • Asset Classes must exist before Models can be created
  • KPI targets should be defined carefully to ensure meaningful reporting
  • Renaming an Asset Class updates its display across the system
  • Deleting an Asset Class may be restricted if it is in use

This structure provides a consistent way to classify Assets and measure performance across the organisation and functionally similar assets.
